Starwood pledges $1m to aid relief efforts

Starwood Hotels & Resorts will donate at least $1m to recovery and relief efforts following last week's terrorist attacks in the USA.

As well as the $1m donation Starwood has also asked members of its frequent guest programme to donate reward points to the September 11th Fund to be used for hotel stays and air travel associated with relief and recovery efforts.

Since Tuesday's attacks Starwood has offered all kinds of support to those directly and indirectly involved with the tragedy.

The W New York in Union Square opened up its ballroom as a shelter to crowds of people escaping the downtown areas. It provided complimentary food and drinks, arranged a complimentary phone bank of 20 phones so survivors could contact their families, and set up a giant TV screen so people could keep up-to-date with what was happening.

The Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers at 53rd Street provided complimentary rooms to 400 firefighters from around the country who went to New York to help with the relief efforts. The hotel also provided more than 1,000 meals per day for rescue workers.
