Nice place, shame
about the clientele
The Kray twins' favourite coffee bar has been awarded listed building status by English Heritage. Pellicci's in Bethnal Green, east London, is described as a rare example of the stylish Italian cafŽ that flourished in London between the wars. Fewer than 500 are thought to remain from an estimated 2,000.
English Heritage said 1950s cafŽs are becoming increasingly rare, and described Pellicci's as stylish, intact and architecturally strong, with a rich deco-style panelled interior.
Owner Nevio Pellicci, who was born upstairs, remembers the Krays, who used to live around the corner - but not for their underworld activities. "They were children when I started serving them," he said. "They were very respectful and charming."
We can imagine. "Excuse me, sir, would you like to give me a free triple-deluxe ice-cream sundae, or should I nail your head to the floor? Thank you kindly."
On the Rhodes
to recovery
A Boscastle chef, who lost all his cookery books in last year's devastating flood, has received a surprise delivery from Gary Rhodes. Scott Roberts, head chef at the Wellington hotel in the Cornish village, was stunned when a BBC TV crew turned up at the hotel and presented him with a brand new set of Rhodes' books, all signed by the spiky-haired one.
"I am an avid collector of cookbooks - it kind of goes with the job - and had about 600 before the flood," said Scott. "I was so happy to receive these books. I wish I could thank Gary Rhodes personally."
The Wellington hotel is due to reopen on 14 May.
No Fair way to trade, golfers' tee-house told
The owner of the Fore Seasons restaurant on a New Jersey golf course says it's just a coincidence that its name sounds like that of the famous Manhattan five-star hotel. "I named the restaurant ‘fore' because it's on a golf course and ‘seasons' because you season food," Johnny Marrone told the New York Post. "I never professed to be associated with the Four Seasons in New York."
Marrone has received a letter from a lawyer for the Four Seasons warning him that he has breached the hotel's trademark rights to the name in connection with food service. He was told he could face legal action if he doesn't make a switch.
