Teashop owner hits out at Coca-Cola

The owner of a teashop claims he has been "trampled upon" by drinks giant Coca-Cola, which is confiscating the drinks dispenser he has been using for 15 years because he was not selling enough drinks.

Bob Hilton, who has run the Market Place Teashop in Barnard Castle, County Durham, for 30 years, said the situation was a case of "The big boys get the perks and the little man gets trodden on."

The dispenser suited his teashop because it took up very little space, he said.

Coca-Cola suggested he replaced it with a cooler for cans and bottles, but Hilton insisted it would be too bulky.

A statement issued by Coca-Cola read: "For dispensed product, where the equipment throughput is too low, the product may not be served at its best, and in these cases the interests of the consumer are best served by providing an alternative."

Huddersfield-based distributor Benjamin Shaw & Son said it would install a Virgin Cola machine as a replacement.
