Pub company Eldridge Pope had a good Christmas, with like-for-like sales increasing by 3.2% in the three weeks to 31 December, it announced last week.

The total rise in sales for the first quarter of the financial year was 2.1% like-for-like, said the group.

Chief executive Mike Johnson said: "With all the uncertainties experienced last year, our customers clearly decided to make the most of Christmas and the New Year period. We are, therefore, delighted with this result which, following our strong performance since the beginning of October, gives us an encouraging start to the financial year."
