Tovey sells Miller Howe to former European editor

Miller Howe, the Lake District country house hotel and restaurant, has been sold to Charles Garside, former editor of the European newspaper, and his brother, for a sum understood to be around £800,000.

Garside will manage the hotel with his brother Ian and sister-in-law Jackie, proprietors of the 18-bedroom Fayrer Garden House Hotel in Windermere.

They bought the property from celebrity chef John Tovey (pictured left), who is retiring in South Africa but will continue as consultant chef for three years.

Tovey bought the 12-bedroom hotel with 70-seat restaurant for £26,500 in 1971.

Miller Howe was put on the market in September last year, through agent Christie & Co.
