UK must wait another year for tourism to recover

The UK's incoming tourist trade is recovering, but it will be at least another year before the number of foreign visitors returns to pre-foot-and-mouth levels, the British Incoming Tour Operators Association (BITOA) has predicted.

The number of foreign tourists coming to the UK in April was just 1.6% lower than at the same point last year and, barring further crises, was likely to move ahead of last year during August and September, the association said.

Richard Tobias, chief executive, said: "We are just about turning the corner. But we have a long way to go to claw things back."
