Weather no match for Gladiators

The West Midlands has endured its soggiest August ever, following one of its driest Julys, but Birmingham hoteliers say it has not affected business during a traditionally quiet month.

The region soaked up more than 160mm of rain (against the average of 100mm and the previous high of 151mm recorded in 1948). "It's always raining in Birmingham," said Andrea Pegg, assistant general manager at the Hotel Ibis.

Stephen Price, general manager at the Copthorne Birmingham, said the decision to drop locally filmed TV show Gladiators had had more impact than the weather.
