What next after 11 September?

Question

"I would like to ask you something that has been worrying me quite a lot lately .

A few months ago I planned to move to a hotel in London to work in a food and beverage position. After the events of 11 September and subsequent developments, I was wondering whether it is the right time to move or not. Are employers cutting down on personnel expenditure? Everyone talks about a crisis in the industry, is it the same in London? Will there not be as many vacancies now?"

"It is impossible to ignore the fact that London hotels have been significantly affected by the atrocities of 11 September and, as a result, a number of employers are watching their staff numbers, payroll and recruitment costs very closely. There have been redundancies within some of the larger and chain hotels. Thankfully outside of London, the last two months have not been quite so challenging and there is less evidence of staff cutbacks. I would advise you to tread cautiously, especially as you appear to have a steady job at the moment. There are jobs out there but they are not quite as plentiful as they were before the 11 September - particularly in hotels. However, if you were to consider contract catering or the restaurant side of the business, there are still vacancies. If you really want to come to London my advice would be to come over and start networking like mad and do all the right things to make yourself known. But I would advise you not to leave your present position until you have a new one confirmed and the contract signed - it may take longer to find and secure work than it would've done earlier in the year. Plus, if you are looking to transfer into food and beverage, your chances of finding a job will depend on the strength of your expertise in this area, you must seriously consider whether a change in direction is the right thing to do at this time. Good luck and I hope you realise your ambitions before too long." Do you have a question for our experts? [E-mail us now, help is at hand.
