The retail food sector fared well with Pret A Manger ranking 34th and supermarket Booth's at 44th. Tesco, which has had a good reputation for its treatment of staff may be surprised at its placing at number 100.
Companies in business for more than seven years with more than 250 people were eligible, and 1,300 were invited to apply. Companies supplied basic information such as turnover and number of staff, but it was the questionnaire that went to 250 randomly selected employees at each company that the rankings are based on. In the end 167 companies were considered for the ranking.
The list was supported by The Department of Trade and Industry and Learndirect and is published in this week's Sunday Times.
