Daniel Gilmore, 26, from Verdi's Caf‚, Mumbles, has won the prestigious Brasilia Barista of the Year Award. He received a trophy and a cheque for £5000, at the Kensington Roof Gardens, London.

He had earlier broken the record for the number of perfect coffees made during the espresso race, the climax of the annual competition, which is now in its fifth year. Daniel produced 50 espressos in just five minutes, racing past the previous record of 42, which had stood for three years.

Daniel said: "I love being a barista and that obviously shows in my work. I am absolutely thrilled to bits." His speciality coffee was a creamy mixture of espresso, hazelnut liqueur and Chocolatte from Cadbury's.

The Brasilia Barista of the Year competition is held in association with Cadbury's.
