Young ask for respect

One of the UK's largest unions is to mount a campaign in Leicester Square and Covent Garden, London's entertainment and leisure heartland, in a bid to recruit new members from among the industry's young workforce.

The union is planning to target workers in restaurants, bars and hotels when it parks its "Respect at Work" campaign bus in the capital's streets next Sunday. Campaigners will hand out leaflets and make a series of public addresses intended to raise awareness of the benefits union membership could offer young workers in the hospitality industry.

"Our young members' committee told us that young people are looking for respect at work and are not interested in knowing how to join this or that committee," said union official Dave Turnbull.

The Respect at Work campaign will continue throughout the summer.
