BELGO has finally reopened its mussels-and-chips restaurant in Covent Garden, six weeks after a massive fire broke out in the multiple-use building of which it occupies the basement.
Although the restaurant suffered only minimal water damage, Belgo has had to wait for the structure of the building above to be repaired. It made use of its enforced closure by refurbishing its beer hall.
It took 120 firefighters to put out the blaze. Belgo chairman Luke Johnson celebrated the reopening by presenting a cheque for £1,500 to the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund. For 10 days diners enjoyed a 50% discount on bills, and every 10th meal was free.
