There are no truly global players in the worldwide hotel industry and the top companies are the same now – at least in brand terms – as they were 10 years ago, claims a new report.
The International Hotel Industry, prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), says that the geographically most widespread companies are represented in less than a third of all countries.
Holiday Inn, Sheraton and Marriott are the strongest companies in terms of their long-term ability to reach global status and are still likely to be at the top in 10 years’ time, the report adds.
Two big companies to watch are Radisson and Choice as both are franchisors which the report considers to be the fastest route to growth.
Contradicting speculation in the UK that the middle market will shrink under pressure from the budget lodge sector, the report predicts that the greatest growth in the future will come from franchised three-star properties.
