Rum is one of the most mysterious spirits on the back bar. It originated in the East Indies and quickly spread to the Spanish, Portuguese and French colonies, arriving in England in the 17th century, where the Navy introduced the rum ration in 1655. This was only abolished just over 30 years ago.
Made from sugar cane juice or molasses, the market is dominated by Bacardi. However, other makes such as Havana Club, Appleton’s and Wray and Nephew are carving out a market share with more boutique brands such as Elements 8 and Ten Cane using superior and more refined products.
But when it comes to rum and the cocktail, one of the best brand-associated drinks is the much loved Bermudan cocktail Dark ‘n Stormy made from Gosling’s Black Seal rum. Gosling was started in 1806 by James Gosling, the eldest son of wine and spirits merchant William Gosling.
Gosling had set out from England to America when bad weather caused him to pull into St George’s port, Bermuda. Here the drink was created and the Gosling’s rum business established. Today the company is run by Edmund Malcolm Gosling, the seventh-generation of the family to control of the company.
Dark ‘n Stormy is trademarked by Gosling and made with its Black Seal rum and Stormy Ginger Beer. The cocktail is described as a long and refreshing thirst-quencher with a kick.
Even if rum is not your tipple of choice, the kick of the ginger helps this drink to stimulate the senses. This classic belongs on every good drinks list.
However, for something a little lighter for the summer, try the luxury loose variation of Dark ‘n Stormy made with Ten Cane, white grapes, agave syrup, and a splash of soda.
- Tall highball glass filled with ice
- 2oz Gosling’s Black Seal rum
- Stormy ginger beer
- Lemon or lime (optional)
Fill a tall highball glass with ice and add 2oz of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum.
Top with ginger beer and garnish with lemon or lime (optional).
