Gucci daughter not allowed to use name for Dubai hotel

The daughter of legendary fashion designer Paolo Gucci will not be allowed to launch a hotel group using the family name, an Italian court has ruled.

Elisabetta Gucci had intended to open an 87-suite hotel in Dubai later this year under the EG Hotels and Resorts by Elisabetta Gucci brand. She plans to have up to 40 hotels around the world within 15 years.

But Gucci, which is now owned by PPR SA, said the use of Elisabetta Gucci’s name in branding the hotels “has caused customer confusion and been harmful to Gucci’s business”.

The hotel company must now cease use of the Gucci name in its marketing and branding activities, the court said. Fines and may be imposed if Elisabetta Gucci does not comply with the order.
