Hoteliers from opposite ends of the service spectrum intend to face the skills shortage head on with the announcement this week of two far-reaching managerial training programmes for school leavers.
Travelodge is launching the UK’s first budget hotel management apprenticeship programme, while 10 of the leading country house hotels and restaurants have joined forces to create a unique hospitality managerial training programme.
Called JuMP (Junior Management Programme), the Travelodge scheme will offer 500 management apprenticeships as the business attempts to grow from 466 hotels to 1,000 by 2025. The search for the first 50 apprentices will get under way this summer.
The training will provide vocational learning in hotel management, retail, operations, marketing and customer service. Apprentices will attain a L2 Apprenticeship in Multi Skilled Hospitality and a L3 Diploma (Advanced Apprenticeship) in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership.
Upon completing the 24-month programme, the apprentices – expected to earn an annual salary of £12,500 to £15,000 – will undertake the Travelodge in-house 12-week management programme and then graduate to a management role.
Meanwhile, 10 luxury properties in the south of England are offering 10 candidates the opportunity to undertake a 25-month training programme, on an annual salary of about £15,000. The trainees, who must be 18 or over and have at least one year’s experience working in a four- or five-star hotel, will spend five months at each of five allocated properties, where they will cover a different discipline at each – kitchen, restaurant, housekeeping/maintenance and human resources, sales/marketing, and reception/reservations.
Sue William, general manager of the Bath Priory, one of the 10 businesses providing the training, said the scheme – called Ten out of Ten – had been born out of regular meetings held between the properties to discuss common problems, particularly the ongoing shortage of skills.
“As a result we have put together a scheme which will provide a top notch training opportunity for some of the industry’s best candidates,” she said.
At the end of the training programme there may be an opportunity for the trainees to take up a six-month placement in one of the 10 properties – Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, Lucknam Park, Mallory Court, Vineyard at Stockcross, Chewton Glen, Calcot Manor, The Bath Priory, Gidleigh Park, Atlantic Hotel in Jersey or the Fat Duck – as either duty manager or host manager.

Your son or daughter could be earning £30,000 a year as a Travelodge manager whilst their friend’s leave university with a £43,000 debt and face an overcrowded jobs market.
My aim is to highlight to school leavers the huge potential of a career in hospitality. We have a target that 45% of our new hotels will be managed by our Travelodge apprentices by 2015.
