Gregg’s Table – the new restaurant from MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace, which has received a barrage of negative reviews since opening at the end of February – has appointed a new head chef.
Spanish-born chef Jordi Vila, 34, has joined the restaurant in the four-AA-star, 80-bedroom Bermondsey Square hotel, London, from Vivat Bacchu, London, where he was head chef. He previously spent two years as sous chef to Nuno Mendes, as well as stints at two Michelin-starred L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon in Covent Garden and as part of the creative team under Oriol Castro at Spain’s three-Michelin-starred El Bulli.
Among the plethora of negative reviews regarding Gregg’s Table, Marina O’Loughlin of The Metro described her meal as one of the worst she had ever eaten.
General manager of the Bermondsey Square Robert Holland said that all the comments and suggestions regarding Gregg’s Table, which serves British retro dishes from the 1970s, had been taken on board.
“While we have experienced a lively start to the opening of Gregg’s Table, we have listened carefully to our customers and adapted the menu accordingly,” he explained. “Jordi is a very talented chef with a fantastic track record and we are sure that he will take the execution of the dishes to a high level.”
Wallace said that he was delighted that Vila had come on board. “His experience is second to none and we look forward to working together to develop the Gregg’s Table concept and offering,” he added.
Gregg’s Table has recently been awarded one AA rosette. Opened in April 2009, the Bermondsey Square Hotel is operated by Bespoke Hotels.
