Sue Williams appointed general manager at Cliveden

Sue Williams, who left the Bath Priory last week after nearly 10 years as general manager, is to take over the reins at the historic country house property, Cliveden.

She will join the 41-bedroom hotel - which in January became a sister hotel of Chewton Glen in Hampshire, following the purchase of the property's leasehold by billionaire property developer brothers Ian and Richard Livingstone, from the administrators of Von Essen Hotels - on 19 June, as general manager.

The hotel, whose freehold is owned by the National Trust, suffered from a lack of investment during Von Essen's ownership and plans are currently being put together for a major refurbishment of the Grade I-listed property, together with the development of a new spa.

"Cliveden is a magnificent building and I'm very much looking forward to being involved in helping to restore it to a sumptuous and highly regarded hotel," said Williams. "A key part of my job will be to build a team which will provide authentic and world-class service to match the stupendous property."

Williams said she is particularly looking forward to working with Andrew Stembridge, managing director of Chewton Glen, who oversees the running of Cliveden, alongside the human resources director, Anita Bower, and sales and marketing director, Chris Ward.

Stembridge described Williams as "one of the most respected and capable general managers outside London" who he has known for many years through his work with Relais & Chateaux and the Master Innholders.

"I can't wait for her to take the reins at Cliveden as we commence the next chapter in the hotel's life," he added
