South Place – the first hotel from restaurant operators D&D London – opens its doors today in the heart of the City of London.

Located between Moorgate and Liverpool Street, the 80-bedroom South Place hotel is intended to be “more meet and eat than sleep” than most London hotels with the combination of two buzzing restaurants, Conran-designed interiors and specially commissioned work by contemporary London artists.

Eating options include 3 South Place, an all-day British diner on the ground floor, and the Angler seafood restaurant – set to open on 17 September – on the seventh floor. Both are overseen by the hotel’s executive chef, Tony Fleming, who was previously at One Aldwych.

Meanwhile, the individually designed bedrooms aim to provide the best sleeping experience in the City with Josphine Home bed linen, cashmere wrapped mattresses and Oranges and Lemons toiletries from perfumer James Heeley.

A strong emphasis on art and design is evident throughout the hotel with a lift lobby featuring a wall of mechanical pixels and a sculpture from the hotel’s art prize winner Zemer Peled on the ground floor.

Bruce Robertson, general manager of South Place, said: Our vision is to treat every guest that walks through the door as an individual, appealing to the refined tastes of discerning travellers as well as our neighbours in the City and surrounding Shoreditch.”

Rooms at South Place, which is a member of Design Hotels, start at £300 with an introductory weekend rate from £176 for a limited period.
