Luxury hotel for Yorkshire Sculpture Park moves closer

Plans to transform former university buildings at the Bretton Hall estate - adjacent to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) - into a luxury hotel have moved a step closer to reality.

The details of a 120-bedroom hotels with restaurants, bar, spa and conference facilities will be considered by the planning committee of Barnsley Council next month.

Plans for the hotel, alongside a 100,000sq ft business park, was submitted by Leeds-based developer Rushbond to Wakefield Council last summer and is now to be considered by Barnsley Council as part of a consultation exercise with neighbouring authorities.

Set within 500 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland, the hotel will be located within the existing Georgian mansion house of Bretton Hall and a contemporary new building housing a bedroom wing.

Its design has been created by Rushbond working in conjunction with Wakefield architects DLA and London-based hotel consultants EPR.

Since opening in 1977, YSP has established an international reputation attracting more than 350,000 visitors each year.

Wakefield Council acquired the Bretton Hall campus from the University of Leeds in 2006 and YSP has since taken over the management of the estate grounds.
