CFSP qualification – raising industry professionalism
In 2009, the Catering Equipment Suppliers Association (CESA) introduced the Certified Food Service Professional (CFSP) qualification.
Its objective is to improve the levels of professionalism in the foodservice sector by creating a recognised industry standard for knowledge and experience, covering catering equipment and commercial kitchen operation. CFSP is an ongoing educational process with a dedicated website where members can build a network of contacts.
The programme had its genesis within the North American foodservice industry before being adapted for the UK. It is now a global phenomenon: CESA is helping to launch new programmes in several European countries, with plans under way for the Middle East, Russia and India.
CFSP is accredited by the University of West London and covers food safety, distribution, kitchen design, new technology and sustainability. It is open to anyone who works in or has experience of the foodservice industry. Students study independently, attend a one-day seminar and must pass a three-hour exam.
"The increasing uptake of the CFSP programme shows how well respected it is by the foodservice industry here in the UK," says Simon Frost, vice chair of CESA. "Now, overseas interest is resulting in it being recognised and adopted by wider communities across the globe."
CESA is the authoritative voice of the catering equipment industry, representing more than 150 firms who supply, service and maintain commercial catering equipment.
