Knightsbridge's Brompton Bar and Grill closes for ‘new challenge'

The Brompton Bar and Grill in Knightsbridge is set to close next week after six years' operation.

Owner Francois O'Neill confirmed to Caterer and Hotelkeeper that the restaurant would close on 21 March, a move which he said was his decision, as he was looking to pursue other opportunities.

He added: "In some ways it's very sad as we have a good offer, but it makes sense to have a new challenge."

The new project is expected to be of a similar ilk to the current business, but O'Neill suggested that he would look to sell the Knightsbridge site, which has belonged to his family for the past 35 years.

O'Neill said that he hoped to launch the new project by spring 2015, about which more details are expected in the coming months.

The Brompton Bar and Grill opened six years ago, after O'Neill took over the running of the then-Brasserie St Quentin from his father Hugh, and Hugh's cousin, restaurant critic Quentin Crewe, who had run the site together to much success since 1980.

The current place serves a Mediterranean-style menu including charcuterie plates, grilled meats, classic pastas and simple fish dishes, plus a wide selection of wine and cocktails.

Historically, there has been a restaurant at the address for over 60 years, starting with the Greek-Cypriot site the Brompton Grill post-1945, which was known for its at-table flambé dishes.
