Prezzo Harrogate hit by serious fire

The Harrogate branch of Italian casual dining chain Prezzo was yesterday seriously damaged by fire, which is said to have taken 18 fire engines and 90 firefighters to control.

The fire reportedly spread from the Albert Street restaurant’s kitchen to the first floor and roof, according to BBC News.  Thirteen nearby flats were evacuated – with four said to have suffered damage ‒ and surrounding streets were closed.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue last night stated that the fire was under control and that the operation was being scaled back, although crews stayed at the scene overnight to ensure that no further damage occurred.

No-one was hurt although the BBC reported that several small pets had gone missing.

Prezzo chief executive Jonathan Kaye thanked the fire brigade for their work.

He said: “We are thankful that no one was injured as a result of the fire at Prezzo in Harrogate yesterday morning.  We thank and applaud the actions of the fire brigade in dealing with the fire. We will assist the fire brigade with their investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
“Overall the most important factor is that there were no casualties as a result of this terrible incident.

“Our primary concern is to secure the building and ensure it is safe. Once that is done, we will be assessing the damage.”

Founded by Jonathan Kaye in 2000, Prezzo restaurant group now operates over 200 sites across the UK, the majority bearing the Prezzo branding and menus. Other brands under the group umbrella include Mexican restaurant Chimichanga, Caffe Uno and Ultimate Burger.
