Chefs invited to submit entries for Scotch Egg Challenge

Entries are being accepted for the annual Scotch Egg Challenge by the Ship pub in London's Wandsworth.

The deadline is Friday 22 August, with a shortlist expected to be announced in late August before a final on 16 September. Previous entrants have included creations from restaurants such as Cinnamon Soho, Duck & Waffle, the British Larder, Peyton & Byrne, the Hinds Head, and the Jugged Hare.

The shortlisted 16 chefs will then compete in the public final, with each creation put before a judging panel including the Guardian food writer Bob Granleese, Catherine Hanly from online restaurant site Hot Dinners, and journalist and author Joe Warwick.

Anyone wishing to enter should email ship@youngs.co.uk and ask for an entry form.

Last year's winner was the British Larder in Suffolk, whose victorious creation included smoked venison; and in 2013 the Bladebone Inn in Berkshire took home the prize with its duck egg, truffle layer, and potato and Parma ham breadcrumb concoction.

The final, which will begin at 7.30pm sharp, is open to the public who will then be invited to sample the creations.

The Ship pub's Scotch Egg competition is just one of several pub-related, high-profile competitions in the capital.

Its approach is similar to that of Docklands pub, the Gun, which hosts the annual Slider Decider burger contest, and whose 2014 winner was MasterChef 2011 victor Tim Anderson. Other entries included recipes from restaurants Ember Yard, Hixter and Brindisa.
