Fly killer suspected in Crathorne Hall blaze

A fire at Crathorne Hall hotel in Yarm, North Yorkshire earlier this month was probably caused by an electric fly killer, according to investigators.

The blaze at the Hand Picked Hotels property broke out on 1 October and 18 fire engines were called after smoke started billowing from the roof of the four-star, 37-room hotel. It was confined to just one part of the building.

A statement by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Following investigations into the cause of the fire at Crathorne we consider the most probable cause of the fire to be an electric fly killer/ insectocutor in the roof space of the east wing of the hotel.

"While other possible causes cannot be fully eliminated we are confident that the cause of the fire was accidental."
