Chef Stagiaire 2015 Award contest now open for entries

The 2015 Chef Stagiaire Award competition is now accepting entries.

In its second year, the contest will shortlist 10 individuals from initial paper entry forms, a copy of which can be downloaded via the Chef Stagiaire website.

Each shortlisted chef will then take part in a stage at some of the UK's most prestigious restaurants, including Alyn Williams at the Westbury, L'Autre Pied, Restaurant Story, Lucknam Park, Galvin La Chapelle, and Arbutus.

The two most-promising stagiaires will then go head to head in the final stage, which will take place at two-Michelin-starred restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London, under executive chef Ashley Palmer-Watts.

Palmer-Watts will judge the pair on technique, attitude and ability, before selecting the overall winner. He or she will then win a four-week trip comprising a two-week stage with Joel Robuchon in his Las Vegas restaurant at the MGM Grand, and another two weeks at the Six Senses Zighy Bay Resort in Oman, helping with the cooking as well as staying within the resort itself.

Three judges will help to select the initial 10 candidates. They are: James Mackenzie of the Michelin-starred Pipe & Glass in South Dalton, East Yorkshire; Richard Turner of the Michelin-starred Turners in Birmingham; and Rob Kirby, chef director of Lexington Catering in London, who was named Foodservice Cateys Chef of the Year in 2013.

Last year's winner was Emily Greenough, then aged 22, from London, who initially staged at Arbutus with Tom Duffil. She beat Craig Johnston, then aged 18, from Maidenhead, who staged at Alan Murchison's L'Ortolan.

Both impressed their respective head chefs so much that they were each offered jobs in their kitchens.
