Porters restaurant to relocate to Berkhamsted
Porters restaurant, which closes its doors in Covent Garden this week, is to relocate to Berkhamsted.
The original restaurant has been in London for 35 years and is owned by the Earl of Bradford. When the closure was announced last year, he said that the restaurant had been driven out by expensive leases.
Bradford said: "There is nowhere that is a more symbolic English landmark than Covent Garden and it is extraordinary to think that after January there will be nowhere in the area where you will be able to enjoy reasonably priced English food. With the ridiculous prices now being charged for leases in London, it is becoming virtually impossible to open a restaurant serving sensibly priced food."
It has now been confirmed that the restaurant will reopen in Berkhamsted in mid-2015.
Porters restaurant director Neil Wornham said: "Site selection for our relocation was incredibly important. We wanted to find somewhere that reflected the heritage that we have at Porters and would also provide somewhere memorable for customers. The new restaurant at Berkhamsted is perfect."
Shelley Sandzer represented the landlord's Lothbury Estate in the deal.
