Brend Hotel Group to launch in-house apprenticeship academy

The Brend Hotel Group is to launch its own apprenticeship academy, with all training taking place at the flagship four-star Saunton Sands hotel in Devon.

The 11-strong group will now offer its vocational training scheme to all apprentices on-site at the hotel, instead of the students leaving to attend local colleges, as in the previous system.

The group has offered vocational training since 2004, but will now be working with training provider HIT Training, who will be responsible for assessors and sourcing funding for eligible apprentices.

There are 60 apprentices on the current scheme, learning skills across hospitality, including front of house, bar, waiting, kitchen, administration, housekeeping, concierge and portering, but the group is also recruiting more apprentices right now.

Director Peter Brend Senior commented that apprenticeships had proved a very important way of "growing your ow"' staff.

He said: "We are a family company that values its employees and encourages them to stay long-term. Apprenticeships are an excellent way of developing and enhancing skill levels and establishing our own academy means we can offer the very best Level 2 and 3 training available in situ. Our aim is to become a beacon of industry excellence."

Andrew Mosedale, Brend's Group HR manager and the new academy principal, called the move "a very positive development for the company".
