Giraffe to open 59th site at London Stansted Airport

Restaurant group Giraffe is to open a new site at London Stansted Airport as part of the terminal's re-development of its retail and food and beverage offer.

The 3,000 sq ft, 141-cover venue will be Giraffe's 59th site, and its eighth airport location.

Open from 4am until the last flight of the day, it will aim to serve the usual Giraffe menu within 15 minutes of an order, in a bid to appeal to time-poor travellers. The menu will include all-day breakfast dishes, a selection of sandwiches, burgers and salads, alongside smoothies, fresh juices, coffee and tea.

The venue will also feature an interior inspired by global travel, including reclaimed luggage racks, scaffolding shelves of travel books and a curved wooden canopy ceiling. Design consultancy Harrison worked on the décor.

Andrew Jacobs, co-founder and managing director of Giraffe Restaurants, said: "I'm hugely excited to be opening our first Giraffe at London Stansted Airport, building on our existing portfolio of airport sites. We aim to deliver on quality, efficiency and great value dishes, with a focus on healthy global food delivered with speed in a relaxing, casual dining environment."

Nick Ayerst, managing director at TRG Concessions, which manages all of Giraffe's airport restaurants in the UK, added: "We believe Giraffe will add an element of contemporary and convenient family dining to the departure lounge. The opening is part of TRG Concessions' on-going commitment to the airport and its passengers in delivering fresh, fast, world food."

Originally founded by Juliette and Russel Joffe, Giraffe last year appointed co-founder Jacobs as managing director after the Joffes' resignation announcement in July, and as the group was sold for £48m to supermarket giant Tesco in March 2014.

It is also on the point of considerable expansion, with three more standalone sites expected to open in the spring, alongside a crop of locations in Tesco Extra stores. The group has seven other locations at UK airports and three sites in the UAE.

London Stansted, owned by the Manchester Airports Group, is undergoing a redevelopment in its food, beverage and retail space, with other original units including Café Balzar, healthy fast food store Leon, coffee and bagel shop Pip and bar and grill the Illustrious.

Similarly, in July 2014, SSP signed a £135m deal to operate five new units within the space, including a bakery.
