Singapore-based MGM Muthu Hotels has snapped up its second UK property with the acquisition of the three-AA-star, 55-bedroom Westcliff hotel in Westcliff-on-Sea.

Originally built in 1891 and located on the cliff tops near Southend-on-Sea, Essex, the hotel - featuring a restaurant, bar and function suites - was bought for an undisclosed sum off a guide price of £1.8m.

The property becomes a sister hotel to the 88-bedroom Belstead Brook in Ipswich, Suffolk, which was marketed last year for £2.5m. MGM Muthu Hotels, which now operates a total of 15 properties in Portugal, Spain, India, Singapore, the Caribbean and the UK, is represented in the UK by Kailayapillai Ranjan of Highgate Asset Management.

The parent company of MGM Muthu Hotels is the MG Muthu Group, which also has interests in restaurants, logistics, mining and construction.

The acquisition of the Westcliff hotel was facilitated by property company, Fleurets.
