The Ivy to re-open in May

The Ivy restaurant in London is set to re-open in May this year, following a five-month closure for refurbishment.

The restaurant is in the process of being completely renewed, wtih the exception of its stained-glass windows.

An auction at Sotheby's later this month will see its artwork, cutlery, glassware and even linen sold off. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the charity Child Bereavement UK.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio has been commissioned to bring the restaurant, bar and private room into the 21st century while retaining the essence of what has made The Ivy special.

Meanwhile art is expected to remain a focal point at the restaurant, with major commissions being installed by renowned British artists, as well as a range of pieces created by emerging names from the British art scene.

Executive chef Gary Lee remains at the helm, and has created a new menu that comprises recognisable Ivy staples alongside modern dishes with international influences, with a particular nod to Southern Europe and Asia.

Typical starters include: Togarashi popcorn shrimp with yuzu mayonnaise; burrata with Sicilian tomatoes, fried zucchini flower with rocket pesto; and raw & pickled vegetable salad with citrus vinaigrette and chia seeds.

Larger dishes will include an extensive steak menu of daily cuts, as well as Ivy "classics". In addition there are new, lighter dishes such as seared and marinated salmon, grilled asparagus, and shaved minted cucumber; and sides that include Parmigiano courgettes; and farro with edamame beans and pine nuts.

Director of the Ivy Fernando Peire said: "I have been involved with The Ivy for the largest part of my career but it still astounds me how far our reputation reaches. It is a much loved restaurant and has become something of a national treasure. The Ivy's latest refurbishment heralds a new chapter in the life of the restaurant, and one in which I am sure she will shine more brightly than ever."
