Scotsman hotel staff face redundancy

Staff at the five-star Scotsman hotel in Edinburgh are facing redundancies, amid claims the business is facing difficult trading conditions.

Staff were informed of the planned redundancies at a meeting late last month, according to the Edinburgh Evening News.

The 68-room hotel, which is operated by JJW Hotels and Resorts group, part of MBI International, employs around 160 people. MBI International is owned by Saudi businessman Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber.

The news comes a month after it emerged that staff had been sent a letter warning them that they may not be paid on time because of a "challenging trading period".

Opened in 2001 by the newly formed Scotsman Hotel Group in the building which was once occupied by the Scotsman newspaper group, the hotel was bought by JJW in 2006 for more than £60m. It went into administration in 2011, but was rescued by Sheikh Al Jaber soon after.

It is not known how many roles are at risk.

No-one from MBI International was available to comment.
