Hotel manager in Wigan threatened by robbers with lump hammer

Police are appealing for witnesses after the manager of a hotel in Wigan was threatened with a lump hammer.

Two men wearing motorbike helmets and brandishing the weapon forced their way into the Crown hotel in Standish, on the outskirts of Wigan, at about midnight on Monday night. They smashed a glass pane in the back door and confronted the manager, who was cashing up for the night in the hotel's reception area.

He was pushed to the floor and one of the men jumped on his lower back before demanding cash.

After stealing the takings - and the tips for the staff - the two men then fled from the hotel on a motorbike. It is believed they rode down a farm track opposite the hotel towards the Coppull area.

One of the attackers was about 6ft 2in tall, of a large build and wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and white trainers.

Detective Constable Andrew Hill said: "The manager was understandably shocked to be confronted by these two masked intruders, and was then subjected to a terrifying ordeal where he was threatened with a hammer and forcibly pinned to the ground.

"Thankfully he did not sustain any serious physical injuries but the emotional trauma he suffered was immense.

"We therefore need to find these two offenders and that is why we are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The Crown is a pub and free house with bed and breakfast accommodation. It is owned by Tracy and Daniel Prince.
