Lease of Lumley Castle on market for £6m

The four-AA-star, 74-bedroom Lumley Castle, a Grade I-listed, 14th century property in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, has been put up for sale for £6m.

Built in 1388, the castle has been the seat of the Earl of Scarborough for over 700 years. It is located within six acres of parkland overlooking Durham County Cricket ground and is a renowned wedding venue.

Simon Stevens of Christie + Co, which is handling the sale, said: "This is a genuine retirement sale following 43 years of continuous ownership by passionate clients who have developed the castle from a medieval banqueting venue to one of the region's foremost hotels with a profitable trading reputation to support the business."

The £6m sale price is for the long leasehold interest in the property.
