Dakota Hotels announces two new awards for university students

Dakota Hotels, the brand of stylish, affordable properties founded by former Hotelier of the Year Ken McCulloch, is to launch two awards for students at Queen Margaret's University (QMU) in Edinburgh.

The awards will be launched at the QMU graduation ceremony on 10 July in Usher Hall, Edinburgh. The Dakota Achievement Scholarship will be presented to the hospitality and tourism student with the most innovative undergraduate dissertation, while the Dakota Postgraduate Award will be made to the student who has demonstrated the most entrepreneurial thinking and approach to their dissertation or project.

McCulloch said: "Dakota has been delighted to support and work alongside QMU. We share mutual respect and an understanding that we must provide the opportunity for ambitious individuals who have committed to learning the foundations of hospitality, to enter our industry with the strongest possible platform for them to achieve great success. Our industry needs enthusiastic, talented graduates who have a genuine passion for delivering service and this sponsorship seeks to award their commitment thus far."

The awards are the latest support for students at QMU from Dakota following the introduction of annual internships and financial sponsorship.

Dakota currently operates two hotels in Scotland: Dakota Edinburgh and Dakota EuroCentral in Glasgow, with a further two properties due to open in 2016.

McCulloch was awarded an honorary doctorate by QMU in 2007. He was named Hotelier of the Year in 1993 as the creator and operator of One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow.
