Sat Bains awarded degree from altitude training venue Nottingham Trent University
Catey Chef Award winner Sat Bains, chef-patron of Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms, has been presented with an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Nottingham Trent University.
He was named a honorary Doctor of Arts in recognition of his significant contribution to catering and hospitality on both a national and international stage, his support to the restaurant industry in Nottingham, and the championing of quality local produce.
Bains used Nottingham Trent University's environmental chamber, which replicates high altitude, at its School of Science and Technology to help him prepare for his world record attempt to serve the highest formal dinner on Mount Everest in April.
Bains told The Caterer: "I am completely blown away by the award. It's a massive privilege and it's great to be recognised by the city that I live and work in. I love Nottingham and I love the East Midlands. I'm very humbled by the award, and there's a great connection with the university because it was Nottingham Trent's chamber that I used to train for altitude. It's been a crazy two weeks; it's been a crazy year really."
The Derbyshire-born chef has repeatedly hit the headlines this year. In April, he was struck down with a pulmonary edema while attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the highest-ever formal dinner party, on Mount Everest, and he was then caught up in the Nepal earthquake which killed 8,000 people.
Last week, he and his wife Amanda announced plans to reduce their restaurant and rooms to a four-day week in order to improve staff working conditions.
"We need incentives to attract the workforce. It's a massive decision for us and yes it will affect our profits, but we both firmly believe this hopefully will be a solution."
Bains, who was awarded a Michelin star in 2003 and a second one in 2012, was presented with the Chef Award at the Cateys earlier this month. He was also recognised with the Special Award at the Craft Guild of Chefs 10th anniversary awards in June.
This is Bains's third such award having received an honorary doctorate from the University of Derby in 2011, and an honorary degree from the University of Nottingham in 2012.
