Egg restaurants spreading wings as health benefits abound

With the popularity of egg-centred meals growing as health professionals sing the praises of eggs and the health benefits they provide, such as their effect on cholesterol, many have made plans for new egg restaurants in London.

Bad Egg, owned by Neil Rankin; Egg Break, from the Soho House group; and Wings and Eggs in Fulham are all basing their menus on this protein favourite, with the street food stall the Good Egg due to open a permanent venue in Stoke Newington at the end of August.

Andrew Joret, chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, expects this trend to spread nationwide, and said "The London restaurant scene has woken up to the benefits of eggs, and we expect the trend to spread nationwide.

"Eggs are ideal for the foodservice sector as they are great value, quick and simple to prepare, and because they are so versatile they can be adapted to suit all meal occasions. Whether you're planning to increase the egg-based options on your menu or launch a dedicated egg menu, providing a great tasting, natural and healthy meal option has never been so easy."

Food safety advice

In recent years there have been a number of food safety issues associated with imported eggs and egg products. Operators can minimise their risk by specifying eggs and egg products that carry the British Lion mark.

The British Lion mark guarantees: freshness, full registration of hens, eggs and feed, vaccinations against salmonella and independent audits.
