Hospitality hopefuls prepare to fly out for Worldskills 2015

Three young hospitality professionals will fly out to Sao Paolo, Brazil, on 7 August to represent the UK at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition.

Competing in the restaurant service category is Lucy Jones, 21, a member of the reception team at Chewton Glen, Hampshire. Her training provider is Brockenhurst College.

She will be joined by two chefs. Danny Hoang, 21, demi-chef de partie at Colette's at the Grove hotel near Watford, has been selected to represent the UK in cooking, while Mikaela Wright, 21, a former student at City of Glasgow College, is competing in the confectioner/pastry section. The chefs' training providers are Westminster Kingsway College and City of Glasgow College respectively.

The three young candidates will join the 41-strong UK squad to compete for medals in more than 40 different skills, including electrical installation, welding and web design. Altogether, some 1,000 young people aged 18-25 will be competing from more than 50 countries.

WorldSkills is the biggest global vocational education and skills excellence competition in the world. To qualify, competitors have to reach the WorldSkills UK Skills Competition finals, which are held at the Skills Show. They then spend 11 months training in their skill supported by their training provider, college, employer and a dedicated training manager.

The competition will be held from 11-16 August and results will be announced on Monday 17 August.
