Shankly hotel in Liverpool set to open later this month

The 83-bedroom Shankly hotel, which celebrates the life of legendary Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly, will open in the city centre on 15 August.

Construction began in February this year and the first stage of the £20m project is nearing completion in time for the new Premier League season.

Sixty of the bedrooms will be Shankly themed, while the hotel will also contain Liverpool's first museum dedicated to the football manager, which is set to include never before seen family memorabilia covering his reign at Anfield.

The second phase of the 145,000 sq ft site, which was once home to Liverpool City Council, is expected to be finished in spring 2016. The project is a joint venture between the Shankly family and Signature Living, the owner of the 30 James Street hotel and various serviced apartments in Liverpool.

Lawrence Kenwright, founder and director of Signature Living said the hotel will play a major part in regenerating the Victoria Street district of the city.

"We're really excited to unveil our fantastic hotel. The team has worked incredibly hard getting the first phase ready in just over five months. This is only the beginning of the project and we're very much looking forward to unveiling the second phase of the development which will include a rooftop bar and restaurant, conference facility and rooftop garden in spring 2016."

Christopher Carline, Shankly's grandson and hotel director, added: "The hotel opening will be an incredibly proud moment for the Shankly family."

An unusual part of the second phase of the development will be a 100ft serpent slide, which will run from the roof terrace to the lobby.

Signature Living said the Shankly hotel project has created around 200 new full and part-time jobs as well as a number of apprenticeships.

Bill Shankly, who died in 1981, was appointed manager of Liverpool FC on 1 December 1959. He led the club until 1974, winning three league titles, two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup, and is regarded as one of Britain's greatest football managers.
