Good Food Guide Awards crowns the Miller of Mansfield

The ninth annual Good Food Guide Readers' Awards have been announced, with Oxfordshire inn the Miller of Mansfield scooping the overall prize.

The inn, run by husband and wife team Mary and Nick Galer, who previously worked at Heston Blumenthal's the Crown and the Hinds Head, won the Restaurant of the Year Award after also being nominated by customers as regional winner for the South East of England.

Having opened just 15 months ago, it was commended for its "intricate" food and "brilliantly priced menu", which lists "a dish and drink" deal at £12.50.

Other regional winners in this year's readers' list comprised Boqueria Tapas (London); James Street South, Belfast (Northern Ireland); Ben's Cornish Kitchen, Cornwall (South West); the King and Thai, Broseley (Midlands); Lunya, Liverpool (North West); Lockwoods, Ripon (North East); the Leaping Hare, Suffolk (East England); the Gardeners Cottage, Edinburgh (Scotland); and the Gallery, Barry (Wales).

The Good Food Guide, an annual guide published by Waitrose every September, also publishes this online list of readers' favourite independent restaurants, pubs and cafés, based on public nominations, as a celebration of independently-owned and run sites. Nominations are then assessed by a panel of Good Food Guide judges. The overall winner is chosen from the list of regional winners. There were 18,000 nominations this year.

Last year's winner was Carters of Moseley in Birmingham.

Elizabeth Carter, Waitrose Good Food Guide editor, says: "While trained inspectors carry out all our reviews, we rely on readers to let us know about eateries that might otherwise be overlooked.

"Our overall winner shows that top-quality food doesn't have to come with a top-priced bill. The Miller of Mansfield not only offers great food and great value for money but also has a fantastic sense of community."

Mary Galer, co-owner of the Miller of Mansfield, said: "Our approach to dining is very straightforward. We serve traditional British food cooked with the best ingredients we can find, in a professional but friendly setting. Winning the award's been a huge morale boost for our staff, and it reflects all the hard work they've poured into the business since it started 15 months ago."
