Shard fire: Diners evacuated from London's tallest skyscraper

The blaze, which started in an oven, was quickly put out by the building's sprinkler system, but 100 customers from three restaurants in the London skyscraper were evacuated.

No one was injured and an investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Diners and staff from restaurants on the 31st, 32nd and 33rd floors were led down the stairs of the capital's tallest building, after the fire started at approximately 10.30am on Tuesday 4 August.

An oven caught light at the building in St Thomas Street, Southwark, but a spokesman for the Shard said the rest of the building was unaffected.

Hutong restaurant tweeted: "Regrettably we are closed until further notice due to an evacuation."

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed no one was injured.

Matt Burrows, LFB station manager, who was at the scene, said: "The building's sprinkler system did its job and suppressed the fire in its early stages, which prevented any serious damage.

"This incident highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies to install them.

"As well as being potentially lifesaving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible."

A spokesperson for the Shard said: "A small oven fire in one restaurant was immediately extinguished by the sprinkler system.

"All three restaurants were evacuated and the London Fire Brigade was called as per standard procedure."

Seven fire engines and around 35 firefighters attended the incident.
