Paperino's founder switches to a new concept in Glasgow
Stefano Giovanazzi, founder of Paperino's restaurant in Glasgow, is to shut the family-run Italian restaurant and open a new, more upmarket concept in the city.
The 55-seat Caffe Parma is scheduled to launch later this month at the Western Tennis Club on Hyndland Road. Staff will transfer from the 170-seat Paperino's West End on Byres Road.
The move was triggered by the opportunity to relocate into bespoke premises and relaunch the menu. The new venture will serve a fish- and meat-based menu, unlike Paperino's, which focused more on pasta and pizza dishes. Three courses will average £18 a head.
"Caffe Parma's menu will reflect my own passion for Italian cuisine and fish, blending locally sourced ingredients with traditional recipes to create a light, refreshing dining experience that brings something a little different to the West End," said Giovanazzi.
The Paperino's concept has been on the Glasgow scene since 1991 when it opened in Sauchiehall Street. Its success led to the opening of the Byres Road outlet in 2005 and another on Vincent Street in 2009.
The Sauchiehall Street Paperino's was sold in 2012. The Vincent Street restaurant closed in 2013 when the administrators were called in.
