Firefighters tackle blaze at Alexander House hotel for eight hours
A basement kitchen was destroyed in a fire which broke out at Alexander House hotel & Utopia spa in Sussex yesterday (Wednesday 5 August) morning.
Firefighters in six engines worked at the scene for eight hours after being called to the five-AA-star, 58-bedroom property hotel in Turners Hill at 4am.
No-one was injured in the blaze, which also caused smoke damage to the first floor of the building, according to the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
A statement on the hotel's website said the cause of the fire was being investigated and thanked "all guests and staff for their co-operation and patience at this time".
A spokesperson for the hotel added: "We are not entirely sure of the extent of the damage just yet.
"We are currently open on a limited basis, but the Utopia Spa is open as normal and we will still be serving afternoon tea. We hope to be up and running again fully tomorrow."
Alexander House is one of three properties operated by Alexander Hotels, alongside Langshott Manor, near Gatwick Airport, and Rowhill Grange, Wilmington, Kent.
