The Hour Glass pub to re-open under Brompton Food duo

London south Kensington pub the Hour Glass is to re-open following a revamp from chef and cookery writer Luke Mackay and his business partner David Turcan.

Located on 279-283 Brompton Road, the 28-cover property aims to be an intimate, neighbourhood pub, and is around the corner from Mackay and Turcan's Brompton Food Market shop and ‘secret garden' café. The former Mitchells & Butlers site has been refurbished by Patrick Thomas Designs, and now showcases its original design features, plus reclaimed wood panelling, and a giant hour glass sculpture.

The pub's kitchen will be overseen by chef Tim Parsons, whose career has spanned roles alongside Bruno Loubet and at restaurants such as Belgravia wine bar and restaurant the Ebury, while the overall operation will be overseen by landlord Henry Gravells at South Kensington Estates, who has managed other London pubs including the Pilot Inn in Greenwich, the Cabbage Patch in Twickenham, and the Salutation in Hammersmith.

The drinks offer will include options from London brewers, alongside some ‘proper cloudy scrumpy', IPAs, and at least three guest ales. Typical food dishes will be along the lines of sea bream with cauliflower, burnt leeks and brown shrimp; flat iron steak with dripping chips and bone marrow gravy; and chocolate porter cake with milk ice cream and honeycomb.

The pub used to be part of the Mitchells & Butlers portfolio, with the restaurant and pubs company putting the freehold on to the market in November 2009. It has since operated as a highly-acclaimed pub serving Cask Marque ales and classic pub food.

Foodie duo Turcan and Mackay met at university, with Turcan going on to work in marketing, communications and business development, and Mackay going into the food and wine business, including his most recent role as in-house chef and writer at London's iconic Borough Market.

Mackay also helped to take over and refresh the now-acclaimed Royal Oak pub in Wiltshire.
