Batemans refurbs its first ‘manchise' pub

The pub will be the first to re-open under this model, which will see the operator take a percentage of the turnover in a bid to reward entrepreneurialism. The brewer expects to open several more pubs under this regeneration programme.

New landlords Iain and Johann Jubbs were chosen by Batemans to run the pub after the duo visited a recruitment open day. Johann's career in particular has seen similar hospitality experience, including seven years' running a pub in Spain and time spent running a tapas bar in Lincoln.

Over £20,000 has been spent on the property's kitchen in a bid to create a food-focused pub that will offer a range of options at all times of the day. More money was also spent to refresh the look of the lounge and seating area, the bar and the toilets.

Iain said: "We're incredibly excited about running the Woolpack - as soon as we heard about the 'manchise' agreement we knew it was for us; it's a very appealing proposition that suits our circumstances perfectly. We're very pleased to be part of the Batemans family."

Stuart Bateman, managing director of Batemans, said: "We have carried out the biggest and most extensive refurbishment of any pub in Batemans history at the Woolpack, and it is now a truly magnificent quality local pub. This investment is part of our comprehensive development strategy which will ensure our pub estate is as strong as it can be."

Batemans was founded in 1874 and is based at the Salem Bridge brewery in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire. It has been operated by four successive generations of the Bateman family, including Jaclyn and Stuart Bateman, who run the company today. It runs over 50 pubs, mainly concentrated around the east of England.
