Planning permission granted for Bromley Town Hall hotel

Permission to build a four-star, 94-bedroom boutique hotel and conference centre in the Grade II-listed Bromley Town Hall in south London has been granted.

Bromley Council has come to an agreement with the Cathedral Group to provide a hotel with wedding and conference facilities, along with two new independent restaurants intended to help make the Old Town Hall a social hub for the town. Restaurant kitchen space will also be built at the back of the central courtyard, with external garden space on the first floor. The plans represent an investment of £20m, and work is expected to begin in late 2016, with the opening in 2017.

The centre will also be used to host a programme of comedy, music, and debates. The building's neighbouring car park, on South Street, will see a five-storey residential development with basement parking, built as part of the agreement for planning permission. Overall the development is part of the council's aim to regenerate Bromley.

Upon submitting the plans, Richard Upton, Cathedral Group chief executive, said that the hotel was aiming to be a high-quality destination that would attract corporate and wedding clients.

He said: "Given the ambition and scale of regeneration taking place in Bromley, we believe this kind of development will be a significant addition to the town centre."

Councillor Peter Morgan, executive councillor for Renewal and Recreation, welcomed the granting of planning permission, saying: "Bromley has lacked a high quality hotel in the heart of the town which is capable of holding conferences and the like and this gap in the market is being filled. This is a major step forward."
