Head of AA hotel services Simon Numphud to leave after 18 years

Simon Numphud is to leave his role as head of hotel services after 18 years at the guidebook publishers.

Numphud, who currently oversees the overall management of inspections and head office teams, will leave the company at the end of January to take up the position of director of sales for independent food procurement company PSL.

A spokesperson for the AA told The Caterer: "Simon has been a much-valued and well-respected member of the AA's senior team, and has steered the Hotel Services business through significant industry disruption and change.

"His career at the AA finishes this year on a high for Hotel Services, with record attendance at the Hospitality Awards in October, and exciting plans for the future and our digital transformation.

"Simon has made a significant contribution to the AA and the company wish him every success for the future in his new role."

Numphud, who joined the AA after a career in the industry working in restaurants and hotels predominantly in Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds, said: " I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the AA and it has been a real privilege to lead the Hotel Services business. "

A fellow and trustee of the Institute of Hospitality, a member of the Reunion des Gastronomes, and a regular judge for the Cateys and Hotelier of the Year awards, Numphud is also a mentor for Oxford Brookes University hospitality management students, having studied hospitality there himself during his formative years.

He also took part in the Back to the Floor dinner, which saw industry leaders return to the floor in April to test their service skills. The event raised £53,000 for Hospitality Action.

Commenting on the announcement, Daniel Wilson, PSL's managing director, said: "We are absolutely delighted Simon is joining the company. His industry knowledge, professionalism and strategic thinking will play a major role in helping PSL achieve its future goals"

Matt Tough, PSL's current sales director, will become commercial director to concentrate on PSL's expansion plans once Numphud is in position. The news comes days after PSL also announced that Sarah Dovey, formerly VP Finance for Red Carnation hotels, will be joining the company as director of systems, also in the New Year.
