Peninsula London hotel gets green light from Westminster City Council

The development of a new luxury 190-bedroom hotel overlooking London's Hyde Park Corner has been given the go-ahead by Westminster City Council.

Due for completion in 2021, the £500m Peninsula London will be developed by join venture partners Grosvenor Britain & Ireland and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels (HSH).

The hotel will sit adjacent to the five-red-AA-star, 93-bedroom Lanesborough London, which reopened in July following a 19-month refurbishment costing more than £60m.

With a design by British-based Hopkins Architects reflecting the heritage of the building's locality on the edge of Belgravia, the hotel will have a grand pedestrian entrance on Grosvenor Place, accessed from a colonnade linked to an internal palazzo-style courtyard. Westminster City Council said the building has been designed to blend into the area alongside many Grade I-listed buildings including the Wellington Arch and the entrance to Hyde Park.

The hotel will incorporate a 140-seat rooftop restaurant on the eighth floor, two further restaurants, a ballroom for up to 350 guests, spa, four meeting rooms and parking for 104 cars.

Included within the plans are 24 to 28 residential apartments with their own leisure and spa facility and separate entrance on Halkin Street. A further 23 "intermediate affordable homes" will also be built nearby on Buckingham Palace Road.

Construction is due to start in summer 2017 following the demolition of an existing 1950s and 1960s office block. Pavements around the hotel will also be widened, alongside additional tree planting and improved road crossings on what is one of the capital's busiest intersections.

Peter Vernon, chief executive at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: "The Peninsula London is an example of the long-term thinking and high-quality design required to maintain London's status as a global city. The scheme will support thousands of jobs and brings tens of millions of pounds to the West End economy. It is a major milestone in our efforts to improve Belgravia as a place to visit, live and work."

Clement Kwok, managing director and chief executive of HSH, said, added: "London is one of the world's most dynamic capital cities and we are excited to move another step closer to introducing The Peninsula brand to London together with our partner, Grosvenor. This hotel has been designed to align with our group's philosophy of developing a small number of the world's best hotels in exceptional locations, while respecting the history and heritage of the local area."

Established in Hong Kong in 1928, Peninsula Hotels is one of the oldest luxury hotels groups in the world. It currently has 10 hotels. London will be the second in Europe, joining Paris.
