Channel 4 has commissioned a new four-part food programme, Tricks of the Restaurant Trade, focusing on chains including Gourmet Burger Kitchen and KFC.
TV chef Simon Rimmer, presenter Kate Quilton and Adam Pearson will present the series. The programmes will compare the cuts of meat used in gourmet burger chains with those used in McDonald’s, focus on off-site food preparation and ask if Britain has ruined the pizza.
It will also evaluate customers’ value for money and show ways that restaurants may make people spend more.
Neil Smith, joint managing director, Betty Productions, said: “This series lifts the lid on the things consumers should be aware of when they eat out. There are over a quarter of a million places to eat out in the UK and we’ve become a nation of foodies. This consumer show taps into the rising trend for dining out and buying takeaways rather than cooking at home.”
Dorothy Byrne, head of news and current affairs at Channel 4 said: “At Channel Four we have previously revealed a lot about the secrets of supermarket food and how food is made in the UK. Now we’re doing the same for restaurant and takeaway food because most families eat out a couple of times a week so it’s vital that they know what’s in the food they’re eating and whether they’re getting value for money.”
