Brewing industry on track to hit 2020 emissions targets
The brewing and pub industry is on track to hit its 2020 reduction targets in energy, emissions and water, according to a new report.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA)'s annual Brewing Green report today suggested that the industry had progressed in each category.
Brewers' energy efficiency rose 1.2% in 2014 (with overall improvement of 11.6% since the base year of 2008), putting it on track to achieve its 19% reduction target by 2020. Carbon emissions dropped by 1.2% in 2014, with a reduction of 29.2% since 2008; well on track to reach the targeted 30% reduction by 2020, and water efficiency was up by 6% in 2014, on track for the industry's 42% reduction target by 2020, the report showed.
The report also underlined two BBPA-led initiatives: ESOS, a scheme designed to reduce costs associated with the new Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme; and the packaging waste reduction programme, Sustain.
In the report, Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive commented: "The sector continues to invest in innovation and efficiency and it is paying off, with further improvements in water efficiency, another reduction in energy use and more companies moving towards zero waste, so that we remain well on track to meet our strengthened 2020 targets."
The report also called on the Government to ensure that any new business energy policy would not disadvantage brewers or small companies within the sector.
